  I am deeply saddened by the passing of Prof. Christopher C. Benninger following his brave fight against illness. He was a distinguished figure in architecture, planning, and education, and a valuable associate editor for Ekistics and the New Habitat. He will be remembered not only for his professional achievements and contributions to Ekistics, particularly during the journal's restructuring, but also for his open-minded, objective, visionary, and strong character.    These past few months have been marked by another profound and sudden loss with the passing of Professor Brian Goodey (Oxford Brookes University), my PhD supervisor, who joined the Editorial Advisory Board just last year.   Both will be greatly missed.   Derya Oktay Editor-in-Chief Read More Read more about SAD NEWS

  From Doxiadis’s Ekistics to Contemporary Approaches to Sustainable and Inclusive Settlements
  Themed Issue

  Ekistics and the New Habitat is planning a themed issue for April 2024 on Human-Centered Planning and Design. The exploration will commence with the foundational principles of Ekistics, the science of Human Settlements, formulated by C. A. Doxiadis (1913-1975), and extend to the contemporary theories and approaches adopted for developing sustainable and inclusive environments.

  Scope

  The influence of Doxiadis's Ekistics approach on the theory and practice of urban planning and design.

  • The reinterpretation and adaptation of human-centered design principles in the context of current discourse on sustainable and inclusive settlements.
  • Innovative approaches and strategies in urban planning and design that integrate human-centered design principles to create sustainable and inclusive settlements.
  • contributions of human-centered planning and design to fostering social inclusivity and community well-being within the framework of sustainable settlements.
  • Integration of technology and data-driven solutions in human-centered design for sustainable settlements.
  • Challenges and opportunities in translating human-centered planning and design principles across diverse cultural and geographical contexts.
  • Community-engaged research and participatory approaches in the design and development of settlements.
  • The challenges associated with human-centered planning and design in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).

  Authors, including scholars, researchers, and practitioners, are invited to submit their proposals aligned with the given scope. Please provide a 250-word abstract before proceeding to submit the full paper. The subsequent steps involve the evaluation of proposals, manuscript submissions, and a double-blind review of the submitted manuscripts in the second phase.

  For submission, please go to http://ekisticsjournal.org/ to register with the journal and submit an abstract, which includes a statement that the proposal is for the Themed Issue on Human-Centered Planning and Design.
