Abstract

The paper explores the urban, social and economic geography of the city of Piraeus and its metropolitan urban area during the recent years. The city is characterized by urban shrinkage, deindustrialization and declining urban conditions. Meanwhile, the port economy is increasing and urban infrastructure and significant real-estate projects lay on the city. The current situation seems to be out of the control of the city. The acceleration of the growth of the port is not reflected in the surrounding neighborhoods. The risk of a new type of spatial polarization at the urban level is visible.

Professor of Urban Planning at School of Architecture NTUA and Director of Urban Environment Lab NTUA (EnvLab). Coordinator of Lavrion Techonogical Cultural Park project (1994-1997) and director of Ermoupolis Industrial Museum (2000). Architect, collaborating with Vaso Trova, of Greek Film Archive Building. Scientific director of EnvLab projects (e.g. Hellinikon Metropolitan Park, Elefsina Coastal zone). Member of international committees for listed monuments and ICOMOS scientific evaluator of UNESCO World Heritage List. Has been awarded twice in international architectural competitions.

Polina Prentou, PhD Candidate, School of Architecture, National Technical University of Athens

Architect, MSc Urban Planner NTUA. PhD Candidate School of Architecture NTUA on the field of gendered approaches to urban social movements in Athens. Research associate of Urban Environment Lab NTUA (EnvLab). Her research interests combine the gendered approaches to the conception and use of urban spaces with the social and environmental aspects of urban (mega) projects.
